The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric is an all-new high-performance, high-tech compact crossover SUV. The Macan Electric will be sold alongside the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Macan, although the new EV looks quite different from its ICE sibling.

The Macan Electric is the first Porsche built on the brand's new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which features an 800-volt power system and a 96 kWh lithium-ion battery integrated into the chassis. All Macan EVs will have a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, and Porsche is offering rear-axle steering for the first time on the Macan.

Porsche will offer two versions of the Macan EV: the Macan 4, with a maximum of 402 horsepower, and the Macan Turbo, which boasts 630 hp. Because Porsche uses the name Turbo for the most powerful versions of its various models, it says the Macan Turbo deserves its name despite not having a turbocharger.

Starting around $80,000, the Macan is more expensive — and more powerful — than other premium crossover EVs such as the Audi Q4 e-tron and BMW iX. The Macan Turbo will be one of the most powerful and most expensive compact crossovers on the market, with its closest competition likely coming from the upcoming Polestar3 or the ICE versions of the Macan itself.

Verdict

The Macan Electric is Porsche's second EV, and if it's like the first, the Taycan, this high-performance compact crossover should deliver outstanding performance and efficiency along with the driving dynamics expected of a Porsche.

The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric is available in two trim levels: Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Both variants feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. We expect the Macan 4 to be the most popular model, and it's our recommendation for most buyers.

With a base price of $80,450 (including the $1,650 destination charge), the Macan 4 Electric comes equipped with an adaptive air suspension, LED headlights and taillights, leather trim, heated eight-way power-adjustable front Comfort Seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, and sport pedals.

Advanced driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-change assist, intersection assist, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist come standard.

With its extensive list of equipment, more than adequate power output, and lower starting price, the Macan 4 is our recommended trim level.

Turbo

The Macan Turbo Electric starts at $106,950, and besides boasting more power, the Turbo upgrades to Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, 20-inch Turbo wheels, special side skirts, LED-Matrix design headlights, carbon-fiber interior trim, 18-way power-adjustable Adaptive Sport Seats, a heated GT Sport steering wheel, and a Bose surround-sound audio system.

Both the 2024 Porsche Macan Electric 4 and Turbo models get dual-motor powertrains. The front motor is the same for both, while the Macan Turbo has a larger motor at the rear. The Macan 4 delivers a maximum of 402 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo bumps output to 630 hp and 833 lb-ft of torque. For both vehicles, the motors are teamed with a single-speed transmission.

According to Porsche, the electric Macan 4 will reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, while the Turbo completes the same task in just 3.1 seconds, making it the quickest Macan the company has ever offered. Top speed is listed at 136 and 161 mph, respectively.

The Macan will come standard with rear-axle steering that can turn the rear wheels up to 5 degrees for better maneuverability and stability at higher speeds. The Porsche Traction Management system, which can adjust power distribution as needed, responds to a loss in traction in 10 milliseconds, further enhancing the electric Macan's driving dynamics.

Porsche also sets the electric Macan up to handle off-pavement excursions. With the air suspension set to its highest level, the Macan has 8.8 inches of ground clearance and can traverse up to 13.3 inches of water — about an inch more than the gas-powered Macan.

We haven't yet had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new Macan EV, but there's every expectation that it will drive like a proper Porsche — and that's a good thing. Our only concern is the new electric crossover's weight: The Macan Turbo weighs about 1,000 pounds more than the standard Macan GTS.

Porsche expects to receive efficiency and range estimates for the 2024 Macan Electric from the Environmental Protection Agency this summer. However, with 96 usable kWh from the battery (the same battery is used in both trim levels), the Macan Electric should get approximately 300 miles of driving range.

With an 800-volt architecture, the Macan Electric can charge at rates as high as 270 kW from a DC fast charger. At that rate, Porsche expects the new electric crossover to go from 10% to 80% charge in about 21 minutes. Plugged into a standard Level 2 charger, the Macan will take approximately 11 hours to charge from zero to 100%.

The electric Porsche Macan features a clean, purposeful design with high-quality materials and multiple digital displays for a high-tech vibe. In front of the driver is a 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster, accompanied by a 10.9-inch central infotainment screen. Also available is a second 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger.

Interior lighting adds to the premium experience. With seven colors to choose from, the ambient lighting appears all around the cabin, including on door panels, cupholders, and the center console. The lighting also "communicates" with different patterns and colors for welcoming, charging status, launch control, and driver assistance warnings.

Multiple seat options are available, ranging from Comfort Seats to the more supportive Adaptive Sports Seats. Leather seat trim is standard, and Porsche offers several color choices, including two-tone treatments. The center console rises up to the dashboard while the seats are slightly lower than in the gas-powered Macan, giving the feeling of a sportier co*ckpit.

Taking advantage of the electric powertrain, the new Macan's rear seat has a flat floor for improved comfort and space. There's also 2.9 cubic feet of cargo space under the hood, adding to the 18 cubic feet behind the back seat, slightly more than in the gas-powered Macan. Folding the rear seat increases the available space to 46.5 cubes. This is comparable to the BMW X4, although not quite as roomy as the Audi Q4 e-tron or BMW iX.

The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric gets a new infotainment system built on Android Automotive. The system's standard 10.9-inch screen appears clear and easy to navigate. An optional second screen allows the front passenger to access navigation, infotainment, and streaming video content. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard with a wireless connection.

The Macan 4 comes standard with a 10-speaker, 150-watt audio system. A 710-watt Bose audio system with 14 speakers and AudioPilot noise compensation is available on the Macan 4, standard on the Turbo. For the ultimate sound, shoppers can upgrade to the Burmester 3D surround-sound system with 21 speakers and a total output of 1,470 watts.

The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric has not yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Both versions of the electric Macan offer an extensive list of standard advanced safety features. These features include automatic emergency braking, lane-change assist, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, intersection assist, and traffic sign recognition.

Porsche also offers InnoDrive, combining adaptive cruise control with active lane-keeping, which provides steering input to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.
