An Updated Apple Cake Recipe From a Classic Favorite

This apple bundt cake holds a lot of happy memories for me. It is a simple cake that my husband would often make. Before kids, we would eat this cake regularly. Back then, the recipe was full of wheat and nuts.

But times have changed since we originally were eating this cake. So now this is a nut-free AND gluten-free apple cake and I couldn't be happier!

I hope that you enjoy this tasty and simple apple cake as much as we do! It's lovely as a dessert, a breakfast treat, or an after-school snack with a cold glass of strawberry almond milk or a mug of vegan hot chocolate.

Gluten Free Apple Cake Recipe Tips

The full recipe and instructions for making this easy gluten-free apple cake recipe are below in the recipe card. Here are some tips and tricks to help you make this cake perfectly, every single time.

  • Choose fresh apples that are flavorful. Dry, boring apples will make for a less than tasty apple cake!
  • I usually don't peel the apples when making cake. It's easier that way and we enjoy the texture. You can peel them if you wish to though.
  • Oil the pan. There's nothing worse than a bundt cake sticking to the pan, so be sure to fully but lightly coat the inside of the pan with oil before adding the cake batter.
  • Use your favorite gluten-free baking blend flour. We almost always use Bob's Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour.
  • You can check to be sure the cake is fully cooked by inserting a toothpick or wooden skewer into the center. If it comes out mostly clean, it's ready!
  • If you don't have a bundt pan, this gluten free apple cake recipe can be baked in a tube pan, a 9x13-inch cake pan, or two 9-inch round pans. Just be sure to leave space at the top of the pan to allow for rising.
  • Make this cake extra delicious by drizzling it with caramel sauce, or spreading it with vegan cream cheese frosting!
  • Keep leftover apple cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days. It stores best in the refrigerator.

What Type of Apples to Use in Cake

This cake recipe uses fresh apples. That is the secret weapon of flavor in our easy gluten free apple cake! You can honestly use any type or variety of apples in this apple cake.

We have become quite accustomed to using Granny Smith apples in our easy apple bundt cake! They are very flavorful and hold their shape nicely.

Our kiddos especially like the tart flavor that apple brings to this dessert.

Other apples that work well in cake include Jonagold, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Braeburn.

Where to Find Gluten-Free Butterscotch Chips

This recipe also has some gluten-free butterscotch chips in it. These can be very tricky to find. Please note that if you need this easy apple cake to be gluten-free, you need to make sure that your butterscotch chips are gluten-free. As if this update, Hershey's butterscotch baking chips are gluten-free, and so are the Great Value brand from Walmart and the Baker's Corner morsels from Aldi.

If you can't find them, you can easily omit them from this gluten free bundt cake recipe! Replace them with white chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, or something else if you like too.

If your diet allows you to eat nuts, I would highly recommend checking out this Maple Almond Earl Grey Tea Cake Loaf by Cotter Crunch. Her recipes are amazing! I would also suggest that you check out my friend Margaret's Gluten Free French Apple Cake.

So I just made this cake. It is super yummy! But when I mixed the ingredients they were very crumbly before they went into the pan? Did I do something wrong? Also, I think because of that, the cake is very crumbly now that it's done. It still taste amazing andwill get eaten but I'm wondering what I did wrong..

Hi Rina! Thanks for commenting. Yes, the batter is very thick when you place it into the pan, try to avoid over stirring. It is more a crumb cake so it does have some crumble but should haven't too much. 🙂 You might want to try slightly increasing your liquid. It may also be a subtle difference in the gluten free flour too. Here is another great resource to check out: http://miglutenfreegal.com/2017/06/07/gluten-free-applesauce-bundt-cake/

Margart from MI Gluten Free Gal took this recipe and adapted it using applesauce. It made it more moist and reduced the sugar! She did a great job with it!

Sorry that it turned out crumbly but glad its delicious. If you are a coffee drinker you can drizzle some coffee over a piece in the morning! YUM! Breakfast Cake!

I made this cake tonight and it turned out beautifully! It was ridiculously easy to make which is a huge bonus :). The only thing I found was that the mixture was really thick and dry so I added a bit of water. This recipe is definitely a keeper. Thanks so much!
