high pres means an elongate area of the surface over which air pressure is higher than usual In medical terms a ridge of high pressure could also describe the state of my nose this past week all stuffed up as it has been with a springtime cold The name is about the only thing the two have in common The medical kind of ridge is associated with plen ty of sneezing mucus wet eyes and the pretty rotten feeling one gets when suffering from a common cold Now colds as we all know can come at any time of year though they are usually associated with win ter or cold wet weather (whence I suspect the name is derived) The symptoms come as a result of an attack on the body by some mean kind of virus In contrast a meteorological ridge of high pres sure signals the best weather there is You can tell just by listening to the emotional high state in the weather voice as he anounces its arrival especially after a spell of rain The merry little breezes blow The sun shines and warms by day and the moon and stars shine on frosty ground by night It is the kind of weather to wax lyrical about You are probably wondering why high pressure is associated with fine weather try to make it sim pie High pressure at the surface means that the weight of the column of air is greater than else where The air is pressing down In fact the sky is falling: air is actually sinking into the high pressure zone Because it starts off pretty cold aloft (at a height of about 8 miles) the air is also dry because cold air cannot hold much moisture And as it sinks it in creases in pressure which causes heating just as pumping up a bicycle tire heats the air being pumped in The result is an absence of clouds and generally warmer air than would otherwise be the case The sun helps too The sun has helped cure my own ridge of high pressure I think At least I can crack a joke about it Earlier this week I could have split a log with it WEATHER LOG Sky Cover og Max Temperature 24 Hour Period PG
