Anne Hathaway steps into the spotlight once again—this time as a pop icon whose past won’t stay buried. A24 has released the first look at Mother Mary, the highly anticipated musical drama directed by David Lowery, best known for his poetic storytelling and visually striking films.
In this emotionally charged feature, Hathaway stars alongside an impressive cast that includes Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. The story follows Hathaway’s character, Mother Mary, an iconic yet deeply scarred pop star who is forced to confront long-repressed memories when she reconnects with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (played by Coel). Their reunion unfolds on the eve of Mary’s comeback performance—setting the stage for a dramatic clash between fame, vulnerability, and forgiveness.
Filmed across Germany, Mother Mary was supported by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF, with production handled by Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and James M. Johnston. The team was joined by Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach of Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion, known for their visually bold and narratively daring work.
